Abstract
IT departments are under pressure to serve the enterprises by professionalizing their business intelligence (BI) operation, while companies can be effective when their structured approach to BI is linked to business. The Volvo Group in 2001 consolidated its BI activities including setting up a common metadata-driven data-integration environment, moving toward federate data warehousing, and developing the team's organization and solution awareness. Variation between organization and operating models result from differences in organizational strategy and structure, an IT operation's maturity, and alignment between business and IT. The Fonstad and Robertson's BI model suggest that business linkage mechanism work vertically up and down the organization, linking projects to company-level and business-level strategies.
