Genetic algorithms for single machine scheduling problems: a trade-off between intensifications and diversification

        Sels, Veronique; Vanhoucke, Mario (2012)
This article reviews the literature on attitudes toward change. This narrative review of 58 journal articles published between 1993 and 2007 indicates that there is a need for a more complete typology of attitudes toward change that also fully captures the core essence of this concept. By means of content analysis we first examined the conceptual overlap between the eight attitude-related constructs included in this review and the working definition of attitudes toward change. Second, the concept “attitudes toward change” was described along four major theoretical lenses: (a) nature of change, (b) level of change, (c) positive—negative view on change, and (d) research perspective. This conceptual review not only summarizes the current state of research but also offers a more complete typology of attitudes toward change, and highlights directions for possible future inquiry.

Global plant networks in European multinationals

De Meyer, Arnoud; Van Dierdonck, Roland; Vereecke, Ann (1996)
This text summarizes the PhD dissertation that was defended by the author in January 2009 under the supervision of Erik Demeulemeester at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium). The text is written in English and is available from the author upon request. The PhD dissertation is situated within the health care services domain and studies the impact of planning and scheduling procedures in the operating room. It incorporates an extensive review of both scientific contributions and the current operating room planning and scheduling practices of hospitals in Flanders (Belgium). The emphasis of the research, though, is directed towards the development, the testing and the application of surgery sequencing algorithms in a day-care environment.

Goal Commitment and Competition as Drivers for Group Productivity in Business Process Modeling

        Rittgen, Peter (2011)
The personnel scheduler constructs a deterministic personnel roster that determines the line-of-work for each personnel member. When unexpected events disrupt this roster, the feasibility needs to be restored by constructing a new workable roster. The scheduler must reassign the set of employees in order to cover the disrupted shift such that the staffing requirements and the time-related personnel constraints remain satisfied. In this paper, we propose an evolutionary meta-heuristic to solve the nurse rerostering problem. We show that the proposed procedure performs consistently well under many different circumstances. We test different optimisation strategies and compare our procedure with the existing literature on a dataset that is carefully designed in a controlled and varied way.

God dobbelt niet op de beurs. Beter beleggen voor een beter leven

        Longeval, Jan (2019)
